WWII veteran
The MAB’s C-53 rolled off the Douglas assembly line in Santa-Monica, California, in June 1943, crossing the Atlantic immediately to the Mediterranean theatre of operations, where it took part in the airdrops for the men of the 82nd Airborne near Salerno. It landed in Normandy after D-Day in August 1944, then helped supply the 101st Airborne during the Battle of the Bulge. Hit by flak in Belgium, it survived the conflict before being converted into an airliner at the end of the war. It was then acquired by Howard Hughes for TWA, embarking on a second civilian career.
A genuine 1943 Skytrooper
The Douglas C-53 “Gruesome”, built in 1943, was a military version of the famous DC-3, specifically designed for transporting troops and dropping paratroopers. Unlike the C-47, it did not have a reinforced floor or cargo door, making it lighter and more suitable for transporting personnel. Although it did not take part directly in the D-Day landings, “Gruesome” faithfully represents these aircraft, which played an essential role throughout the Second World War.
An exemplary restoration in Brittany
In 2018, the DC3 was acquired by the Musée de l’Aéronautique de Bretagne, which undertook a complete restoration. After three years’ work, “Gruesome” is back in its original military livery and back in the air in a configuration faithful to that of the 1940s. Today, it takes part in numerous historic events and air shows, including Izavia Airshow, much to the delight of the public.
A history linked to Melun
For several years, this DC3 was owned by George Perez, a key figure in the world of warbirds in France. The most French of Americans, he left his mark on the Melun-Villaroche airfield, flying several historic aircraft with France’s Flying Warbird.
