Wings of Courage
They were not armed, but they fought; not on the beaches of Normandy, but in the din of a C47 converted into an ambulance. Flight Nurses silently wrote one of the most courageous chapters in the history of war medicine.
During the Second World War, 2,000 Flight Nurses transported and cared for nearly 1.2 million soldiers on every continent. The wounded were transported aboard C-47 Skytrain, C-54 Skymaster (military version of the DC-4) or C-46 Commando aircraft, which had been converted to accommodate up to 24 stretchers.
The Pegasus Fund, assisted by female members of Univem, pays tribute to these forgotten heroines with “Angels in the Sky”, an event featuring period costumes to present the history of flight nurses.
Children will be invited to participate in the Flight Nurse Academy, with a training course, sending coded messages, simulating patient care and loading the wounded into the ambulance. Children and visitors will be able to have their photo taken in a WC9 ambulance with nurse accessories.
